Org. Setting and Reporting

The Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD), of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ (DESA) internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension up to a total of six months, pending on the needs of the department. The Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD) monitors national and global socio-economic trends, identifies emerging issues, and assesses their implications for social policy at the national and international levels activities; particularly in the areas of poverty eradication, productive employment and decent work and the social inclusion of older persons, youth, family, persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and persons marginalized from society and development. The DISD/DESA develops policies, programmes and cooperative actions to facilitate the implementation of the Internationally Agreed Development Goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

The internship is UNPAID and full time.

 

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

 

Responsibilities

The Social Affairs Intern must have a strong interest in social development, possess ****ytical skills and have some experience in primary and/or secondary research. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

 

-Undertaking substantive research and drafting to prepare policy documents, as well as other ****ytical and official documentation

-Provide assistance in preparing materials relevant to the work of the team, including presentations and concept notes.

-Draft research or draft policy-oriented content for web sites and/or social media accounts.

-Draft targeted key messaging and monitor and evaluate the networks used by the Division.

-Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings.

-Assisting in the preparation and convening of events, meetings and special events.

-Collect, compile, and/or draft content for regular and ad-hoc information materials (e.g. newsletters, fact sheets, talking points, etc.).

-Provide assistance in preparing public information materials, including presentations, event concept notes, flyers.

-Research, draft and/or update on-line content for web sites and/or social media accounts, with guidance from subject matter experts and relevant substantive focal points.

The intern is expected to:

-Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

 

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or

(c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.

-Be computer literate in standard software applications.

 

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

 

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
